Steelhead Fishing
– Haida Gwaii – Queen Charlotte Islands
November through March

Ocean Salmon | Halibut & Bottom Fishing | Steelhead Fishing

A close look at a December Yakoun steelhead.

When in their prime, they almost appear ghostly. When in spawn, their colors are as vibrant as fireworks. They have been known to be ‘a fish of a thousand cast’ and yet they posses a spell over fishermen that causes them to endure long hours of sideways rain, snow and freezing temperatures to have a single shot at a possible hook-up. This fiery acrobatic fish is known as the majestic steelhead. As elusive as they are, there are places far north where pressure is minimal, numbers can be high and an array of techniques can put an angler onto double digit days. Come and witness the allure of the steelhead for yourself as you take in the tranquility of the pristine Yakoun River of Haida Gwaii – Queen Charlotte Islands.

A thick bodied 36-inch steelhead is gently supported until ready for release.

One of the most rewarding fish you will ever hook into…

… it’s not about how big or how many, it’s about finally getting ‘one’. The relief is a reward in itself. This priceless sensation is whenever a steelheader get’s the first of the season, the first of the trip, the first of the day or more importantly the first ever! It’s a fishery that becomes more and more appreciated to an angler the more they do it.

As the seasonal temperature drops, the fishery heats up. The Yakoun River steelhead of the north begin to show in numbers during early November and run strong until March.

A mid-season trophy Yakoun River buck steelie!
