Halibut & Bottom Fishing
Haida Gwaii|Queen Charlotte Islands
May through September

Ocean Salmon | Halibut & Bottom Fishing | Steelhead Fishing

A nice snapper (yelloweye rockfish).

A “tale of a trophy barndoor”!

Aside from being excellent table fare; halibut, lingcod and yellow-eye (snapper) are abundant throughout the west coast of the Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii. When conditions permit and a boat is positioned correctly over the right spot, action can be fast and furious with a smorgasbord of rockfish. Whether it’s a trophy lingcod (thirty plus pound) or a barndoor halibut (hundred plus pound), you can be assured you will have a workout pulling these mighty fish from their lairs.

A nice trophy lingcod.

These denizens of the depth are some of the most colorful fish of the north pacific. Their species are as numerous as their colors, but the most commonly targeted bottom sport fish are the pacific halibut, ling cod and yellow-eye rockfish (snapper). The halibut are noted for their back breaking sizes of over one hundred pounds and even reaching over weights of a whopping 400 pounds. The ‘pit bulls’ of the deep are those toothy critters known as the ling cod. They aggressively attack and feed on all fish within it’s range. Then there are the ‘pumpkins’ known as yellow eye rockfish. They are a bright yellowish orange and are often found in patches (hence the reference to ‘pumpkins’). Their willingness to take a variety of jigs and baits make them a great fishery for everyone.

This “payoff” is measured in pounds and in smiles!
